How Many Car Brands Do We Need?
Australia purchases over one million cars and trucks every year.
We have one of the highest vehicle to population ratios in the world.
In my opinion we have created a confusing marketplace as there is too much choice. The buyer can easily make a very expensive mistake as it is not unusual for models, and sometimes makes, to disappear from Australian showrooms.
Australia offers more makes of cars than either the USA or Great Britain.
Car makers around the world, some in existence for over a hundred years and some created in the last few years, build millions of automobiles. This year nearly 70 million will roll off global production lines.
Listed below are automobile makers that sell, or have sold, in Australia. In some cases they are manufacturing companies in their own right, and others are subsidiary companies or products of “badge engineering”.
Makes who have left Australia under their own brand are marked with an asterisk*. Some of these makes remain in Australia but under another badge, eg: Opel is part of General Motors, and manufactures cars in Europe to sell under the Holden badge.
